Four, a giant, father of Anak. From him the city of Hebron derived its name of Kirjath-arba, i.e., the city of Araba (Joshua 14:15; 15:13; 21:11; Genesis 13:18; 23:2). (See HEBRON.)

(city of the four), the progenitor of the Anakim, or sons of Anak, from whom their chief city, HEBRON, received its name of Kirjath-Arba. (Joshua 14:15; 15:13; 21:11)

Hebron, or Kirjath-Arba, as "the city of Arbah" is always rendered elsewhere. (Genesis 35:27)

'ARBALIST, noun [From arcus, a bow, and balista, Latin , an engine to throw stones; Gr. to throw.]

A cross-bow. This consists of a steel bow set in a shaft of wood, furnished with a string and a trigger; and is bent with a piece of iron. It serves to throw bullets, darts, arrows, etc.

'ARBALISTER, noun A cross-bowman.

A name given to Abi-albon, or, as elsewhere called, Abiel, one of David's warriors (2 Samuel 23:31; 1 Chronicles 11:32), probably as being an inhabitant of Arabah (Joshua 15:61), a town in the wilderness of Judah.
