Generally associated with purple (Exodus 25:4; 26:1, 31, 36, etc.). It is supposed to have been obtained from a shellfish of the Mediterranean, the Helix ianthina of Linnaeus. The robe of the high priest's ephod was to be all of this colour (Exodus 28:31), also the loops of the curtains (26:4) and the ribbon of the breastplate (28:28). Blue cloths were also made for various sacred purposes (Numbers 4:6, 7, 9, 11, 12). (See COLOUR.)

BLUE, adjective blu. One of the seven colors, into which the rays of light divide themselves, when refracted through a glass prism. There are various shades of blue as sky-blue, or azure, Prussian blue indigo blue smalt blue etc.
Prussian blue a combination of the oxyd of iron with an acid called ferro-prussic.
BLU'E, verb transitive To make blue; to dye of a blue color; to make blue by heating, as metals etc.
BLU'E-BIRD, noun [blue and bird.] A small bird, a species of Motacilla, very common in the U. States. The upper part of the body is blue, and the throat and breast, of a dirty red. It makes its nest in the hole of a tree.
BLU'E-BONNET, noun [blue and bonnet.] A plant, a species of Centaurea.
BLU'E-BOTTLE, an. [blue and bottle.] A plant, a species of Centaurea, called Cyanus, which grows among corn. This and the former plant receive their names from their blue funnel-shaped flowers.

BLU'E-FISH, noun [blue and fish.] A fish, a species of Coryphaena, of the order of thoracics, found about the Bahamas, and on the coast of Cuba.
BLU'E-HAIRED, adjective Having hair of a blue color.
BLU'E-JOHN, noun Among miners, fluor spar, a mineral, found in the mines of Derbyshire, and fabricated into vases and other ornamental figures.
BLU'ELY, adverb With a blue color.
BLU'ENESS, noun The quality of being blue; a blue color.
BLU'E-THROAT, noun [blue and throat.] A bird with a tawny breast, marked with a sky-blue crescent, inhabiting the northern parts of Europe and Asia.
